Iran has denied any involvement in the drone attack that resulted in the deaths of three US military personnel in Jordan. State media reported that Iran refutes the allegations made by US President Joe Biden and UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who blamed Iran-backed groups for the attack near the Syrian border.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Nasser Kanaani, stated that the resistance groups in the region do not take orders from Iran and act based on their own principles and priorities. Kanaani added that claims of Iranian involvement were driven by specific political goals to alter the realities of the region and influenced by third parties, including what he called the “child-killing Zionist regime.”
The Iranian mission to the United Nations echoed these sentiments in a statement, denying any connection or involvement in the attack. Instead, it blamed the incident on a conflict between US forces and resistance groups in the region.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization of Iran-backed armed groups, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The drone strike took place at Tower 22, a logistics support base, and it marked the first instance of enemy fire resulting in American casualties since the beginning of the war in Gaza.
President Biden condemned the attack, describing it as despicable and wholly unjust. He has pledged to hold those responsible accountable at a time and in a manner of the United States’ choosing.
The US has accused Iranian-backed groups of carrying out numerous attacks on its military installations in Iraq and Syria since the conflict’s outbreak.
