Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and spouse receive a 14-year sentence in state gifts scandal

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in jail for their involvement in a state gifts scandal. The sentencing was handed down by an anti-corruption court in the capital city of Islamabad. This comes just a day after Khan was given a 10-year jail term in another case related to revealing state secrets. It is unclear whether Khan’s sentences will run consecutively or concurrently.

In August, Khan was also given a three-year prison sentence by a separate court for selling gifts valued at over 140 million rupees ($501,000) that were in the possession of the state. Although the sentence was later suspended, Khan remains in custody for other cases. Khan has maintained that he legally purchased the items, but government officials have alleged that his aides sold the gifts in Dubai.

Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, has been in remand throughout the trial. The couple married in 2018, just months before Khan was elected as the prime minister. In addition to the jail time, the court has also disqualified Khan from holding any public office. This comes ahead of the parliamentary elections on February 8.
